Tim Hardaway Booted From NBA Event
February 15, 2007
Tim Hardaway found out that his gay-hating ways are not wanted at the NBA All Star weekend. Good for the NBA.
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
The NBA banished Tim Hardaway from All-Star weekend in Las Vegas because of his anti-gay remarks. Hardaway, who played in five All-Star games during the 1990s, was already in Las Vegas and scheduled to make a series of public appearances this week on behalf of the league. But after saying, “I hate gay people” during a radio interview, commissioner David Stern stepped in.
“It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours,” Stern said in a statement Thursday.
Of course, Tim has now issued a statement (ie excuse for his homophobia) today that begins “As an African-American, I know all too well the negative thoughts and feelings hatred and bigotry cause.” And you didn’t realize that before you went all stupid on the gays? Its not like we haven’t seen this kind of thing blow in the media were some dumb-ass athlete makes anti-gay remarks, is raked over the coals for it and then issues a weak apology. Enough already. LGBT people have existed since God proclaimed, “Let there be gays!” We are not going away. And no, we are not looking at non-gay guys in the shower. At least, not often.

Good for Stern, Hardaway doesn’t deserve to be there.

No, he doesn’t belong there at all. The NBA has fans from all over the spectrum including gay people. Being gay is not that much different from not being gay. Its just another way of being human.

He had a hell of a jump shot. Of all the millionaire boob athletes the NBA could have chosen to rep the league…
I’ve never seen a Gay ID card. Are they issued by the Feds or states?
One thing Timmy has started is a national discussion about both issues, gayness, and stupid bigots.
Every once in a while that needs to happen.
=;-)~

I agrre that Hardaway’s foot in mouth has sparked a national discussion about gays in sports along with Amaechi’s coming out. What’s cool from my perspective is the way each is handling the situation. Amaechi is articulate, passionate and thoughful. Hardaway is ignorant and bigoted.

Hi bloggernista
This situation has introduced an interesting irony. Is what Hardaway said worse than the attacks now being unleashed against Hardaway? One could ask, what’s the difference?

Sorry Crimson, but I don’t agree. Hardaway attacked gays and said that we shouldn’t even exist. No gay person has ever said that about him. The only reason people are saying anything about is because he made homophobic comments.

Hi bloggernista
I see, well as a group you have made it abundantly clear that you will destroy the life of anyone who doesn’t agree. It would seem that is far more of an abomination than being called a name. So in the end, who has committed the greatest atrocity?
