Call them legion for they are many. The New York Times tries unsuccessfully to point to the death of Jerry Falwell as a sign that the old guard right-wing evangelicals is receding as a newer and more politically sophisticated school emerges. On the surface that may seem the case with this new school of evangelical speaking out about the genocide in Darfur, global warming and global HIV/AIDS, but the hatred of LGBT people, the opposition to embryonic stem cell research and reproductive choice continue unabated.

“There always will be in the evangelical movement a strong identification with what we call the traditional moral issues — abortion, marriage between a man and a woman, addiction to pornography,” he said.
