CA Assembly Approves Gay Marriage

UPDATE: Here is Assemblymember Mark Leno testifying regarding the marriage equality bill.

For the second time, the California State Assembly has passed a bill extend the rights of marriage to same-sex couples. The bill has passed on a party line vote with Democrats voting yes and Republicans voting no. Governor Schwarzenneger has stated publicaly that he will veto the bill as he did when a similar bill passed the legislature in 2005. The current bill goes to the State Senate.

In voting to deny same-sex couples the right to marry, some Republicans hid behind their religious beliefs saying that their Christianity required them to discriminate against gays. They also cited Propostion 22, a measure approved by voters in 2000 that prohibits the state from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other jurisdictions. But, Prop. 22 says nothing about performing marriages of same-sex couples within California.

California now offers same-sex couples domestic partnerships through which they are able to access many of the state level benefits of marriage. Domestic partnerships and civil unions are nice and provide some benefits to same-sex couples and their families, but they are nothing more than a pale and weak substitute for marriage. Separate, unequal and unfair.

Heil Arnold said he will veto it.

What were the good people of California thinking when they elected this womanizing has-been actor as governor?

The failure of even one Republican to vote for marriage equality aslo shows just how weak the Log Cabin Republicans are. They could not get even one of their party’s elected officials to vote for the bill. Its amazing.
