Marriage Matters

This heartbreaking video shows again why marriage really does matter for same-sex couples. Anyone who says otherwise is just plain wrong.

Soooo touching, bloggernista. And it informs us non-gay supporters, in that essential path through our hearts, of the duty we each have to secure equal rights for all citizens.

made me cry…. post 9/11 (I live in NYC) I was haunted by the idea that something would happen to the man I love and I, like the the narrator in the video, would be denied access to him in the hospital…two years later we were married and are now family both legally and emotionally… however not so long ago I too would have been denied the right to marry the man I love because he is black and I am white…..there is something inherently essential about the right to marry in a “civilzed” society…to me it is the very crux of any equal rights debate… the right to create our own families not only has legal siginificance but is one of the most crucial, meaningful, spiritual choices one can make about one’s own life… it is an essential aspect of the human experience, and should be denied no one.

Hope you don’t mind, but I linked to this post on my blog.

I’ve heard so many stories of couples where when one is hospitalized, the other has no right to visit, make any medical decisions, etc. In some cases, the hospitalized partner’s family bans the other person from the hospital room.

    Pretty pathetic all around.

It’s a damned shame in this day and age that equal rights is something we are still talking about, but doing sweet f. a. about (from a legislative point of view).

And what concerns me is that the bunch of right-wing extremists who are in power in Ottawa, if they ever get a majority government, they have stated on many occasions that they will repeal every hard-fought-for-and-won right to marry, and other protections for the gay community.

Sometimes I wonder if we’ve really made any progress when I see the state of things. But, in my own little Utopia, things would be so different than it is now.

I firmly believe that we should celebrate whenever two people meet each other and fall in love, that we should treat all people equally under the law and that we should speak out against inequality in whatever way we can. The ability to marry the person of one’s choosing seems to me one of the most fundamental rights that we all (should) have.
