Obama on Anti-Gay Surgeon General Nominee

Barack Obama criticized George’s Bush’s homophobic nominee to the post of Surgeon General saying:

“America’s top doctor should be a doctor for all Americans, and so I have serious reservations about nominating someone who would inject his own anti-gay ideology into critical decisions about the health and well-being of our nation,” Obama said this morning. “As with other nominees, I will listen to the testimony of Dr. James Holsinger, but this Administration must know that the United States Surgeon General’s office is no place for bigotry or ideology that would trump sound science and good judgment.”

Amen brother. We have had more than enough of George “I’m a uniter, not a divider” Bush and his affirmative action program for evangelical wingnuts. Holsinger, you may remember, started Hope Springs Community Church which includes an ex-gay ministry.

With his approval rating approaching the temperature of Greenland, Bush does not need a nomination fight. But that’s exactly what he is going to get here.

In addition to Obama, the Senate committee that will consider Holsinger’s nomination includes Hillary Clinton and Chris Dodd and is chaired by Ted Kennedy.

And the gay advocacy group are seriously pissed off about this as well. Human Rights Campaign, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Soulforce have a made statements slamming Holsinger’s nomination.
