Marriage Bill Passes NY Assembly

The New York Assembly passed a bill giving same-sex couples the option to marry yesterday by a vote of 85-61. The Empire State Pride Agenda and Marriage Equality New York lead the lobbying effort with the support of national and local groups. In recent weeks there have been a number of steps forward in the fight for marriage equality including the defeat of an anti-gay constitutional amendment in Massachusetts and the passage in California Assembly of a marriage. Other advances this year include passage of civil unions laws in New Hampshire and New Jersey.

Here is what Pride Agenda executive director Alan Van Capelle had to say:

“Our community and our allies made it very clear to their state legislators that access to marriage—and the over one thousand state protections and responsibilities that come with it—needs to be provided to same-sex couples and our families.  Lawmakers heard from labor unions representing hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and religious leaders from hundreds of congregations all across the state,” said Van Capelle. “They heard from our families and friends, our co-workers and neighbors who told them that New York needs to treat all families equally. The message clearly had an impact and today the Assembly did the right thing. Now it’s time for the Senate to do the right thing,” emphasized Van Capelle.
