Another Reason DADT Has To Go

UPDATE: Michael Mullen, President Bush’s nominee to replace outgoing Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Peter Pace has reportedly told Senator Susan Collins R-ME that Congress should make its own decision about repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. More here.

If you need yet another reason why the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy is just plain stupid, check out the blog post from SLDN’s Steve Ralls.

While 8000 recruits were given ‘moral waivers’ to enter military service, 11,000 perfectly well-qualified troops were fired because they happen to be lesbian, gay or bisexual. Nearly 800 of those had ‘mission-critical’ skills, including more than 300 with language training. But what most of them didn’t have was a criminal record.

Steve’s post references a recent CBS Evening News segment on the how the military is lowering its standards in order to fill its ranks as the country is at war with Iraq. Among recent recruits 8,000 had criminal backgrounds and 100 were convicted felons. Meanwhile, roughly 11,000 soldiers have been kicked out for being lesbian, gay or bisexual. This follows the news of a rapid increase in gang members in the military including drug dealers, white supremacists and and violent criminals.

From CBS News:

Evidence of gang culture and gang activity in the military is increasing so much an FBI report calls it “a threat to law enforcement and national security.” The signs are chilling: Marines in gang attire on Parris Island; paratroopers flashing gang hand signs at a nightclub near Ft. Bragg; infantrymen showing-off gang tattoos at Ft. Hood.

Its not at all comforting to know that while the FBI is considering gang activity in the military “a threat to law enforcement and national security” that the military and Republican members of Congress are more concerned about targeting soldiers like Antonio Agnone and Stephen Benjamin who happen to be gay.
