Gays and The Democrats

Gay historian John D’Emilio gets it about right in a Newsweek interview when he says this:

Since the Mondale campaign in 1984, the Democratic Party at the national level has not had a great deal of trouble speaking about gay issues and speaking to gay audiences. They’ve done that with a great deal of consistency. So in this view the debate is one more, small step in a path that’s really been carved out for more than 20 years. The party has had much more difficulty at the national level in delivering anything. They love to talk about gay issues and to welcome gay constituents into the fold, but they just haven’t provided very much concretely. Maybe that’s because since the ‘80s there have been only very short periods when there’s been both a Democratic president and Democratic control of both houses [of Congress].

As I point out in a post on The Bilerico Project, there are other forces at work slowing up progress on LGBT civil rights that we need to be mindful of.

In the upcoming presidential forum sponsored by HRC and Logo, the Democratic candidates with the exception of Joe Biden and Christopher Dodd will be grilled on LGBT issues.

Who will say something that will help them to stand out in the minds of LGBT voters?

Its going to be the same old song and dance, although I’m looking forward to watching. I think Hillary has been the most supportive with the most gay votes. We shall see.

I am still hoping that someone will pull out a unexpected card that will make the gays go wild.

Well, Hillary has the lion’s share of money raised from “gay zip codes” but whether she is tops in popularity among the gays I think that is yet to be determined.

I think that a big part of Clinton’s fundraising ability has to do with the incredibly smart and well-connected person she has hired to run her LGBT outreach.
