20 Million Dollars for “Nappy Headed Hos”

UPDATE: One of the Rutgers basketball players that Imus referred to as a “nappy headed ho” is suing the shock jock for damage done to her character and reputation.

How much is the phrase “nappy headed hos” worth? Well, if you are well-known racist shock jock Don Imus, its worth $20,000,000.

That’s how much The Drudge Report is saying that Imus will recieve in a settlement with CBS after the company fired him for making derogatory comments about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team on his radio and television shows.

Check out the clip below for a reminder of what Imus said.

Not only will Imus get millions of dollars, he is also expected to sign a new contract for a new radio program. Among the rumored suitors is Sirius Satellite Radio.

A Sirius spokesman declined comment on Tuesday, but CEO Mel Karmazin, a former top executive at CBS, told Fox News Channel last week: “The fact that he had been fired wouldn’t stop me from having Don work for me again. He makes you a lot of money.”Despite the negative publicity, Imus is capable of generating tens of millions of dollars in advertising revenue a year through high ratings, experts say.

I wish that I could say that I’m surprised that Imus will sometime soon sign a new multi-million dollar contract, but I’m not. There’s serious money to be made from Imus’ brand of racist, sexist and homophobic bigotry and the corporate media can’t seem to quit him.

More here.

    $20 million?

Wow, then how much should I be paid for Anus in the Morning? When I wrote that to diss Imus, I didn’t receive a penny!

Imus got exactly what he deserved, not a penny less and not a penny more. He had a contract that did NOT include any sort of termination for bad behavior clause – duh! He a shock radio host.

He had a contract. Only NFL players get fired without their contract’s being paid. Imus would have had to do something criminal to not get paid after he signed his contract. He deserved to be fired, but they had to pay him. Don’t give a guy a long term contract unless you really trust him.

My problem is more that he and others like him are given the platform to spew bigotry because they bring in cash. Its just shows how far the worship of cold hard cash infects our culture.

i just dont understand, im 15years old and alot of the black kids i go to school with call themself n*&^%s and refer to the girls as hoes and bitches too! how can this guy get in so much trouble. i know hes a adult and adults shouldnt say that cause us kids will say them too. but then its ok to publish 2 pacs music and he says the same stuff but worst in the very first line. i really think that i live in a screwed up world where everyone is looking for a handout. maybe i should just quit school and start looking for the first rich person i can sue.

    Bloggernista,
The problem isn’t large companies allowing someone to “spew bigotry” all over the airwaves. The problem is the people who listen. People are the ones who make or break change. If people don’t listen, companies won’t pay people like Imus.

It’s not a chicken and egg. Hate starts at home, not in the media. The media is merely a reflection of society. An archived newspaper is merely a snapshot in time of exactly what society was like at whatever time the snapshot was taken.
