I Spy a Spy Satellite

Not content with using warrantless wiretapping to eavesdrop on American citizens, the Bush administration has now decided to expand the domestic use of spy satellites.

According to officials, one of the department’s first objectives will be to use the network to enhance border security, determine how best to secure critical infrastructure and help emergency responders after natural disasters. Sometime next year, officials will examine how the satellites can aid federal and local law-enforcement agencies, covering both criminal and civil law. The department is still working on determining how it will engage law enforcement officials and what kind of support it will give them.

Access to the high-tech surveillance tools would, for the first time, allow Homeland Security and law-enforcement officials to see real-time, high-resolution images and data, which would allow them, for example, to identify smuggler staging areas, a gang safehouse, or possibly even a building being used by would-be terrorists to manufacture chemical weapons.

I don’t know about you, but I am feeling safer already.

I do wonder what would happen if this effort was spent to find and capture Osama bin Laden rather than spy on American citizens.

The satellites over the US can’t be used for other areas. Those satellites are in fixed orbits, normally polar orbits though some are geosynchronous.

There are some privacy concerns, but here shouldn’t be many. Those sattelites have been watching us for decades and the people using them should be the ones you’re most concerned about – the Intel Community (NSA, CIA, etc). Now you may actually get a benefit from the system to offset all the “spying” that has already been done.

Just to make you more nervous, I’ve been accessing the low end of this satellite for years and the capabilities of even those systems was awesome. A little hint: DON’T GROW POT! LOL!

Since Big Brother’s already watching, I wonder when we’ll start holding our “Two Minute Hate.” Oh, I forgot. We already have Fox “News.”
