Mark Foley Investigation Hits a Speed Bump

In the post right below this one, I update you on “completely heterosexual” Ted Haggard. Let’s check in with another conservative hypocrite former Republican congressman Mark Foley.

Its seems that the investigation into his unseemly online overtures to teenage pages is still going on. The authorities in Florida want to look at congressional computers that Foley used, but Foley and the House of Representatives are doing an Amy Winehouse imitation and screaming “no, no, no.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says it hopes to conclude its investigation next week. Foley, a Florida Republican, resigned from Congress on Sept. 29 after being confronted with the computer messages he sent to male teenage pages who had worked on Capitol Hill.

“We have requested to review federally owned computers that Mr. Foley used during his time as a representative, but the U.S. House of Representatives … cited case law restrictions that prohibited them from releasing those computers,” said Heather Smith, an FDLE spokeswoman.

Smith said that the House claims the computers are considered congressional work papers, and that only Foley can release them for review.

Florida investigators were working with the FBI and Foley’s attorney, David Roth, to try to reach an agreement, Smith said. At the investigation’s conclusion, its findings will be forwarded to prosecutors to determine if charges are warranted.

In case you’re wondering, the one year anniversary of Foley’s resignation from Congress will be on September 29.

While I think Foley showed a terrible lack of common sense, I don’t think he broke any laws.

From what I have read Foley did have a thing for pages–after they turned 18. All of them were at least 16 when they joined the page program, which is the legal age of consent in DC.

If that is true then why spend our money on an investigation? Why do we need to investigate tacky?

The age of consent in FL is 18. If Foley is found to have seduced or attempted to seduce someone under 1, he could be in big trouble.
