How Many More Republican Scandals?

The real question for Republicans in Washington is how low can you go, because we are approaching a level of ridiculousness. You can’t make this stuff up. And the impact this is having on the grass-roots around the country is devastating. Republicans think the governing class in Washington are a bunch of buffoons who have total disregard for the principles of the party, the law of the land and the future of the country.

— Republican strategist Scott Reedon the seemingly endless stream of revelations of hypocrisy, financial misdeeds and sexcapades of Republican Party bigwigs.

The New York Times has a good recap of recent scandals that have rocked the “family values” spouting GOP. Just as their constant cries of “We support the troops!” have been proven false be their inaction, their family values rhetoric has been proven false by their behind closed doors actions.

Larry Craig is following in the footsteps of Mark Foley, Ted Haggard and Bob Allen who all fought to deny LGBT people civil rights while they actively sought out sex with other men. This is not just a matter of them remaining in the closet or making the choice to keep their sexual orientation private. These are all cases of self-loathing gay or bisexual men who used their positions of power to harm other LGBT people and to try to force the rest of us back into the prison of the closet.

I have sympathy for people who are genuinely struggling with dealing with their sexual orientation or gender identity and learning to love themselves. I have no sympathy at all for people like Craig who opposes the repeal of the military ban on openly gay soldiers. Just because he has chosen to live a dishonest life and sold his soul to gain political power does not mean that he should be able to use that political power to force the rest of to burn in the hell of the closet that he is clinging to with all his might.

I suspect that the media sharks are smelling blood in the waters, as with every scandal uncovered, it only serves to chum the waters around Washington. I think we may see a continuing parade of sex scandals at least through until the end of this year.

And for those who are struggling with their sexuality, the more this is sensationalized, the more likely their struggle will become more difficult. If these types would be honest for once in their lives, this would not be such a big deal. But, honesty and politicians is a true oxymoron.

I coined a new term for these people some months back on my blog… HYPOTWIT, defined as an incredibly stupid hypocrite.
