GOP Tells Larry Craig to Get Out

The homophobic stench emanating from the GOP is as wretched as smell in the bathrooms where Craig cruised on a seemingly regular basis. Yesterday I asked the question “Is the GOP anti-gay?” With very few exceptions, I believe that they are. They have not missed any opportunity to attack LGBT Americans for political gain and they have often done so with the complicity of gay people like Larry Craig, former RNC field director Dan Gurley, Mary Cheney, former congressman Ed Shrock and others. Now Craig is reaping what he has helped the Republicans to sow.

Republican pressure on Craig to resign his senate seat is continuing to build.

As a measure of the pressure Craig faces, party officials said a statement had been drafted at Republican Party headquarters calling for the third-term senator to resign. It was not issued, these officials said, in response to concerns that it might complicate quiet efforts under way to persuade the 62-year-old lawmaker to give up his seat.

Craig has been a member of Congress for nearly thirty years and has one of the most conservative voting records. He scored a zero on the Human Rights Campaign congressional scorecard for his opposition to even the most basic of LGBT civil rights legislation. But in the days since it was revealed that he pled guilty after being arrested for playing bathroom footsie with an undercover male in a Minneapolis airport, the Republican has swiftly and repeatedly called for him to resign. Meanwhile, Senator David Vitter, confessed connoisseur of prostitutes, has the full support of the Republican caucus and will run for re-election with there blessing.

Craig and Vitter had similarly conservative and anti-gay voting records. But, then again Vitter paid to commit adultery with women not men. Craig did the unthinkable. He sought sex with another man.

CNN is reporting that Craig is expected to resign as early as today.
