Iowa Judge Says Let Gays Marry

August 31, 2007 at 7:08 am 2 comments

UPDATE: Mitt Romney continues hating on the gays with a statement calling for a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

The ruling in Iowa today is another example of an activist court and unelected judges trying to redefine marriage and disregard the will of the people as expressed through Iowa’s Defense of Marriage Act. This once again highlights the need for a Federal Marriage Amendment to protect the traditional definition of marriage as between one man and one woman.

On Thursday a judge in Polk County Iowa ruled the state’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional and ordered county officials to begin processing marriage licenses for six same-sex couples. Couples from across the state can apply for marriage licenses in Polk County.

The judge’s decision will undoubtedly be appealed and the County Attorney has already said that he is going to seek an immediate stay on the decision. If the stay is granted, the judge’s decision will be placed on hold pending an appeal.

This is great news and continues an amazing year for the fight for LGBT civil rights in Iowa. Earlier this year the legislature passed and the governor signed non-discrimination and safe schools legislation. A big reason for the successes has been the increase in the number of Democrats in the state legislature. In the 2006 elections state activists partnered with the Human Rights Campaign to increase the number of Dems in the state as an electoral strategy to improve chances of passing LGBT legislation.

Why are people so afraid of same sex marriage? These people should be concerning themselves with the healthcare crisis, or the soldiers in Iraq, or global warming. Marriage is an act of love, and in today’s world, anything that promotes love is okay by me.
