Larry Craig’s Resignation Speech

September 2, 2007 at 8:34 am 3 comments

Here is the speech that Idaho Senator Larry Craig gave in announcing his resignation effective September 30. He pledged to “fight like hell.” Craig was pressured by the Republican Party to resign his seat, yet in his speech he praises the very same people how threw him under the political bus immediately after the story of his arrest broke.

The Republican Party and its decision to attach itself to the religious extremists that now compromise a large part of its base have helped to perpetuate the kind of vicious homophobia that has forced millions of LGBT people including Craig to be ashamed of being gay and to hide in the closet.

Craig’s commitment to the GOP and his continued contempt for the LGBT community is inexplicable. He had an opportunity to stand up and urge the GOP to rethink its the overwhelmingly level of homophobia and heterosexism that permeates its politics. Instead he chose to continue to cower in the darkness of his closet.

Blogger and activist Mike Rogers who broke the story of Craig’s bathroom antics last fall had this to say on Craig’s resignation:

Today, Larry Craig apologized to everyone except the people he has most harmed by his actions — gay Americans. His legacy will include his career-long work in opposing basic civil rights for gay and lesbian Americans, creating an atmosphere where it is unsafe for many to be honest about their lives.

Those in American politics who use anti-gay sentiments for political purposes must learn from this experience and reconsider their divisive tactics. Politicians like Larry Craig have helped to create a society that drives many men and women into the closet. Larry Craig’s arrest, when coupled with the hypocrisy of seeking sexual encounters from the very men he actively legislates against, becomes merely the catalyst to expose the dishonesty and secrecy of anti-gay politicians who expect a community to harbor its own enemies within.

The time when politicians can stand with one foot on the platform of homophobia and the other in the closet has come to an end.

He is still determined to live in his depressing and soul-killing closet while the rest of have to clean up after his mess. We will have to deal with the media’s current obsession with stories portraying most if not all gay men cruising bathrooms in the way that Craig did.

He had the chance to be honest about who he is and chose to continue to live and present a lie. He has also hired the defense lawyer who is represent the dog killer Michael Vick.
