Cleaning Up After Larry Craig

Chicago attorney and gay activist Steve Sanders makes a great point in an op-ed published in the Chicago Sun Times about the recent sex scandals involving Larry Craig, Mark Foley and Ted Haggard:

The truth is that these behaviors are not about being gay (any more than Sen. David Vitter’s patronage of the D.C. Madam was about being straight). If anything, they are about being closeted and repressed — conditions that Republicans and many churches have encouraged by treating homosexuality as a source of shame rather than a normal human variation.

Through their bumbling and hypocrisy, Haggard, Foley and Craig have not only disgraced themselves, they have inflamed old stereotypes — stereotypes that were being rapidly discarded as more and more gay people came out and shared the realities of their respectable, everyday lives with families and friends.

Republicans, evangelical Christians and right-wing conservatives have helped to perpetuate the idea that homosexuality is a sickness that must be stamped out before it causes the kind of moral rot that will destroy Western civilization. What’s more is they claimed that being LGBT is an affront to God. They have sought to codify into law this anti-gay paranoia using selective bible passages, questionable research and hollow protestations of “hate the sin, not the sinner.”

Even as the LGBT movement makes cultural and political progress, the anti-gays continue to be so effective that people with same-sex attractions such as Craig, Haggard and Florida State Representative Bob Allen side with the very groups that have enforced the soul killing closets within which they are imprisoned. Rather than tell the truth about themselves, they have chosen instead to side with those who find people like them vile and worthy of nothing but contempt. Those of us who are honest about our sexual orientations are left to clean up the mess left by the scandals that the Craigs, Haggards, and Allens have created even as the continue to trash us publicly while seeking physical contact with us privately.
