John Edwards’ Ambitious Plan to Fight HIV/AIDS

John Edwards raised the bar dramatically with the unveiling Monday of his ambitious plan to fight HIV/AIDS. The plan was released on Monday in a speech before the Families USA/Kaiser Foundation Health Care Forum on Monday.

Edwards made clear that to better fight HIV/AIDS domestically Medicaid must be expanded to provide coverage for people who are HIV positive before the progress to an AIDS diagnosis and that universal healthcare has to be a part of the solution. Edwards also argued for age-appropriate sex education and an end to the federal ban on needle exchange programs. To assist with the fight against global HIV/AIDS, Edwards said that the U.S. should spend an additional $50 billion dollars over the next 5 years on prevention and treatment.

Edwards also noted that 2 out of 3 new cases of HIV are among Black and Latino Americans. The racial disparity in HIV/AIDS speaks seriously to the urgent health needs impacting communities of color and the failure of our government and non-profit groups to effectively deal with HIV prevention and treatment in those communities.
