Georgetown Students Protest Anti-Gay Attack

Students at Georgetown University held a rally to protest an anti-gay attack by a Georgetown student against another that occurred on September 9. Phillip Cooney has been charged in connection with the attack against the gay Georgetown student who says that he has physically attacked by several men after being followed and taunted with anti-gay slurs. Cooney is the son of George Bush’s former chief of staff of the Council on Environmental Quality.

From the Georgetown Voice:

The victim, a Georgetown student whose identity has not been released, notified MPD after identifying Cooney on Facebook. He later picked Cooney’s picture from an MPD photo spread of nine Georgetown students. The University provided MPD with the photos used in the spread.

Jova said that such double verification is “a very strong investigatory [method]” and that the independent identifications, along with the victim’s injuries, constituted probable cause to arrest Cooney.

The Georgetown student protesters collected more than 700 signatures on a petition urging the school’s administration to increase support for LGBT students and to take stronger action against anti-gay bias on campus.

The Metropolitan Police Department reports that there have been 27 bias related attacks reported in the District so far in 2007. 21 of those attacks involved sexual orientation.

Video footage of the Georgetown protest can be viewed here.
