Coming Out in Color

October 11, 2007 at 8:47 am 1 comment

In celebration of National Coming Out Day I will be running a series of posts focusing LGBT people of color and their coming out experiences.

People of color who are LGBT face some additional factors during the coming out process that white LGBT may not have to deal with including homophobia in our ethnic communities, racism in the LGBT community, homophobia coming from churches and families that expect and sometimes enforce a standard of heterosexuality. That does not mean that being a LGBT person of color commits us to a life of doom and gloom. It simply means that there are a few more things to think about as we ease on down the road to self-acceptance and affirmation.

The National Coming Out Project of the Human Rights Campaign has assembled a bevy of resources specific to the LGBT people of color that will you or somebody you know come out loud and proud about being LGBT.
