Republican Attack Machine Assaults 12 Year Old

Yes, you read that right. Not content with targeting anyone not in lockstep with their radical conservative agenda, congressional Republicans and bloggers have launched a full scale attack on 12 year old Graeme Frost.

Graeme gave the Democratic radio address recently about the CHIP program which provides funding for health insurance for uninsured kids. Democrats and a few Republicans pass an bill that would extend the CHIP program and double the number of poor kids who could be covered under CHIP. President Bush has vetoed the bill with the full support of the Republican leadership in the House and Senate. The bill passed the Senate with a veto-proof majority. A veto override veto is scheduled for October 18th in the House.

Graeme and his nine year old sister were severely injured in an automobile accident three years ago. Both suffered severe brain trauma and Graeme was in a coma for a week. He still requires physical therapy and his sister now attends a special school for disabled students. Graeme’s parents are raising four kids on their collective $45,000 a year salaries and neither receives health insurance through their jobs. It would have cost $1,200 a month for them to purchase health insurance before the accident. Now after the accident with a handicapped daughter and a son that requires physical therapy, the insurance cost will have skyrocketed.

If it weren’t for CHIP, I might not be here today. … We got the help we needed because we had health insurance for us through the CHIP program. But there are millions of kids out there who don’t have CHIP, and they wouldn’t get the care that my sister and I did if they got hurt. … I just hope the President will listen to my story and help other kids to be as lucky as me.

Since his commentary about how his family would have not been able to afford the medical bills for him and his sister without S-CHIP, Graeme has been the target of a vicious smear campaign by right-wing bloggers and members of the Republican Party. Michelle Malkin, National Review, Powerline and Weekly Standard have all come out with guns blazing against Graeme and his family.

Right-wing blogger Mark Steyn says:

“The Democrats chose to outsource their airtime to a Seventh Grader. If a political party is desperate enough to send a boy to do a man’s job, then the boy is fair game.

Emphasis added.

The GOP attack dogs are desperately trying to defend the indefensible veto by Bush of a program that has the support of the majority of American voters. The GOP has talk a good game about being pro-family, but when it comes down to brass tacks they repeatedly oppose measures that will benefit working and middle class American families in favor of corporations. They oppose a bill that would ensure that millions of uninsured kids could see the doctor when they need to while spending hundreds of billions of dollars on the failed war in Iraq.

I wrote a post earlier this week saying If Mitt Romney Only Had a Heart, now its clear why he doesn’t. He’s a Republican.

please explain to me how this poor family is able to own over $400,000 worth of property (both residential and commercial), operate 3 expensive vehicles and send 4 kids to private schools… all while they can only manage to work “part time?”

seems to me they are doing just fine… so why should hard working taxpayers be forced to foot their bills? why didn’t they buy private insurance (available in MD for between $150-$425/month for a family?

what is wrong with a little personal responsibility?

    Eric,

What’s wrong with a little honesty? The lies that you and other conservatives are putting out about Graeme’s family have been debunked, yet you continue to put them out.

Your smear campaign against a 12 year old kid won’t work here. The tactics Republicans are using to target this kid and his family are despicable.

Here are the facts that the right-wing distorted in order to attack young Graeme:

    1) Graeme has a scholarship to a private school. The school costs $15K a year, but the family only pays $500 a year.

    2) His sister Gemma attends another private school to help her with the brain injuries that occurred due to her accident. The school costs $23,000 a year, but the state pays the entire cost.

    3) They bought their “lavish house” sixteen years ago for $55,000 at a time when the neighborhood was less than safe.

    4) Last year, the Frosts made $45,000 combined. Over the past few years they have made no more than $50,000 combined.

    5) The state of Maryland has found them eligible to participate in the CHIP program.
