Anti-Gay Rhetoric Surfaces in Texas City Council Race
The Republican Party’s addiction to using anti-gay innuendo and homophobic statements to win elections continues in a city council race in Fort Worth, Texas.
Republican council member Chris Silcox said the following in a speech endorsing Chris Turner before the Fort Worth Republican Women’s Club. As Silcox makes his comments, the assembled women laugh and laugh.
We have what looks like a runoff between two and that could be Joel Burns and Chris Turner. We have two people of the opposite partisan politics, opposite philosophical persuasions and opposite sexual orientations. I didn’t tell you which one was homosexual. He’s married to a female and the other is married to a male. You make your own mind up.
Will the Republican Party whose leader, George Bush, claims to be a “compassionate conservative” condemn these remarks that are clearly intended to slur Joel Burns? Or, will he remain silent as he has done before when members have tried to build anti-gay bigotry into a campaign strategy?
