What Does Stephen Colbert Know That Other Candidates Don’t?

October 29, 2007 at 3:14 am 1 comment

As Mike Connery at Future Majority observes, Stephen Colbert is the first presidential candidate to reach one million supporters on Facebook. Considering that Colbert announced his campaign about a week ago, that’s pretty damn impressive.

Yeah, I know Colbert is a fake candidate running a fake campaign. It is Facebook after all and things like this tend to go viral there. This does, however, hint at the potential power of using Facebook, not necessarily as a frontline recruitment tool, but definitely as a way to get people to tag themselves as a supporter of a candidate or issue. We all check out the groups/causes that our friends have joined and are more likely to join or pay closer attention to those causes because we value and trust our friends.

What’s it all mean? That’s what we need to figure out.

BTW, if you have not checked out Future Majority, do so now. Mike and company are offering some of the smartest analysis of youth political engagement anywhere on the interweb.
