Trent Lott Going for the Cash

No matter how he tries to spin it, Trent Lott’s resignation from the Senate is all about the money. And maybe a hot Texas based call boy.

From the Politico:

So what drove the timing of this talented and politically secure senator’s departure from the chamber? Fear of lost income from a newly passed ethics law that imposes a two-year ban on former senators’ ability to lobby their old colleagues, say Lott’s allies.

The two-year ban takes effect on Jan. 1. Lott’s retirement is effective “by the end of the year,” he said at a news conference in Pascagoula, Miss. In moving up his retirement date, Lott will have to comply with only a one-year ban on lobbying his old Senate chums.

Make no mistake Lott will make bank as a lobbyist. After 35 years in Congress, he has a keen understanding of Congress really works and more numbers in his little black political book than the D.C. Madame. It doesn’t hurt that his son Chester is the founder of lobbying firm Lott and Associates.

The story of a relationship between Lott andgay escort Benjamin Nicholas, on the other hand, does not quite pass the smell test. The story initially broke on the blog Big Head DC. The blog’s founder Rob Capriccioso has faced past allegations of less than accurate reporting. Capriccioso was dropped as a freelance writer for Radar after reporting that Sam Donaldson’s phone number was in the phone records of the D.C. Madame.

Nicholas is denying any relationship with Lott and declines to disclose client information. There may be more to the story, but for now, I’m not buying.
