Will Mitt Romney Gay Bash His Way to the Presidency?

November 27, 2007 at 4:13 pm 2 comments

Mitt Romney is under the delusion that attacking gay and lesbian families is going to win him the presidency. In a new direct mail piece that just hit mailboxes in Iowa Romney brags that he is the only one of the leading Republican candidates to advocate writing discrimination against gay men and lesbians into the U.S. Constitution.

From The Politico:

Romney, whose campaign has debated internally whether or not to draw such direct contrasts with paid media, is clearly trying to set himself apart as the only electable candidate who sides with the conservative GOP base on a key issue.

The piece, sent by a rival campaign, is the classic “side-by-side,” used to paint a rival (or rivals) as being on the unpopular side of a policy. Unsaid, of course, is that Romney himself took a much more moderate approach to gay rights issues when he ran for the Senate in 1994 and governor in 2002.

Asked why they were going on the offensive, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said, “The governor’s support for a federal marriage amendment to protect traditional marriage is what sets him apart from other candidates.

“Gov. Romney has been the most vocal advocate of protecting marriage from activist courts like the one in Iowa that has targeted the state’s Defense of Marriage Act,” Madden continued. “The information we sent to Iowa voters is part of our campaign efforts to let folks know Gov. Romney stands with them on the important issues.”

As for the timing, Madden said, “what better time than as the day to vote draws closer.”

In others words, this is nothing more than a cynical attempt to curry favor with the GOP’s evangelical base that expressed doubts about Romney because of his Mormon faith.

Memo to Mitt: Your addiction to divisive wedge issue politics may win you the Republican nomination, but it guarantees that you would lose the the general election. We have had enough of being parsed and divided into competing interest groups. Its time for change and a serious focus on solving the real problems facing the country. Your use of anti-gay attacks to motivate your right-wing base proves that you are not the one we need to get out of the morass of the last seven years.

It looks that way. Romney wants to reach to far right conservatives, using hate speech as a method of platform. I think he forgot the days he courted us years ago, securing a Mass. victory.

Ah, the republican obsession with gays continues! Perhaps there is something wrong with me, but gays just don’t scare the crap out of me.

In the end, I agree, Romney’s divisive strategery will win him the bitter core of the right wing of the republican party, but little else.
