Does Mike Huckabee Want to Quarantine HIV+ People?

December 7, 2007 at 9:29 am 6 comments

I posted yesterday about how Mike Huckabee thinks God wants him to be president. Today I found out more disturbing news about Huckabee who is surging in the polls in Iowa to be the Republican nominee for the presidency.

Huckabee apparently wants to quarantine people who are HIV+. Here is what he had to say in 1992:

It is the first time in the history of civilization in which the carriers of a genuine plague have not been isolated from the general population. This deadly disease, for which there is no cure, is being treated as a civil rights issue instead of the true health crisis it represents.

and

If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague.

Yeah, he’s definitely the kind of person that I want for president. Not.

The folks at People for the American Way have created a report detailing just how right-wing Huckabee is entitled Why Religious Right Activists Like Mike Huckabee.

    Huckabee is a fucking idiot.

I think religious wingtards like him should be quarantined. In fact, he and Romney should be sent off world to a planet without oxygen.

I remember the vile and hidious William F. Buckley calling on HIV-people to be tatooed in order to ID them from the general population.

As someone who worked in HIV non-profit for 10 years, I can’t imagine a more dehumanizing scenario to put these folks through than a tatooing process.

Huckabee is a stupid hillbilly who should have the words “I Am Stupid” tatooed across his forehead.

It seems that The Huck has either read all the stuff about Jesus and lepers or else had a (political) deathbed conversion, it seems that his tune has changed drastically (http://blogtoendaids.blogspot.com/2007/12/huckabee-releases-aids-statement.html).

We have to wonder if the first statement was Out-Reaganing Reagan or if it was his actual opinion — or could it be that he is merely being politically savvy today? One finds such an odious statement can go far in his redemption in most people’s eyes who live with HIV.

Were I quarantined, I wonder where they would make the camps? Perhaps we could purchase a group of the Bahamas with limited population, or else just cut off the Overseas Highway at Key West. I fear it would be Nome.

As a physician, I am sorry to burst all of your bubbles, but That was 15 years ago; it also at the time would have been the correct response to containing an incurable highly contagious disease. It is not nice to hear, but it would have prevented it from becoming the epidemic that is has now, For anybody that has contracted the disease in the last 15 years, had things been enacted at that time, you would not likely have it. Whoever, is at fault, it doesn’t matter we can’t turn back time. I also do not agree that it would be appropriate at this time; i simply feel that it is important that people not be simple minded enough to think that the condition is the same as 15 years ago.
