Openly Gay Soldier on 60 Minutes

On Sunday 60 Minutes is set to air an interview with the first active duty openly gay soldier to appear on camera. Army Sargent Darren Manzella is currently serving in Kuwait and has previously served in Iraq. Sargent Manzella will talk about life under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

The show will air on Sunday at 7pmEST/6pm CST on CBS.

In the 14 years since Bill Clinton signed DADT into law 12,000 soldiers have been kicked out of the military for being gay or perceived to be gay.

Big thanks should go to Servicemembers Legal Defense Network for working with 60 Minutes to create the gays in the military segment and also for all of the amazing work that they do to overturn DADT and to provide support and resources to LGBT members of the military. In the pantheon on national LGBT organizations SLDN does not get quite the recognition it deserves. That needs to change.
