Florida Anti-Gay Amendment Hits Major Snag

Efforts by anti-gay activists to place on the ballot a proposed amendment to the state’s constitution that would ban marriage between same-sex couples in Florida permanent has hit a pretty big snag.

The Florida Department of State rained on their hateful parade with the news that the Florida anti-gay amendment may not make the ballot.

Those seeking to put the amendment on the 2008 ballot must gather more than 611,000 signatures from across the state by Feb. 1. Those who backed the amendment that would ban gay marriage thought they had reached that threshold late last year.

But a new count of petition signatures ordered last week by the Department of State now shows that the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment is short by roughly 22,000 signatures.

This does mean that Florida gays are out of the woods yet.

1) The anti-gays have two more weeks to gather the remaining signatures they need.
2) The anti-gays can challenge the legality of the counting process.
3) The anti-gays can lobby the legislature to put this on the ballot during the upcoming legislative session in Tallahassee

The Florida primary is scheduled for January 29th and the large number of voters expected to turn out gives the anti-gays a great opportunity to gather signatures.

If you live in Florida, you can help to this attack against gay families by signing up to volunteer with Equality Florida.

If you do not live in Florida, you can still help by making a contribution to the campaign to defeat the amendment.
