Things Younger than John McCain

May 13, 2008 at 6:13 am 14 comments

Did you know that John McCain is older than the state of Alaska, the polio vaccine and the chocolate chip cookie? He is also older than Mount Rushmore, the nation of Israel and FM radio.

These fun facts and more can be found at the fantastic new blog Things Younger than McCain.

While McCain’s staff and supporters are likely to try to spin this as “ageism,” I agree with Ezra Klein:

That’s all sort of funny, but it also points to a more serious critique of McCain’s mindset, which mixes a deep desire for World War II-style heroics with a habituation to the paranoia and fear typical of the Cold War-era. What you don’t see in McCain is much recognition that the world has changed, that today’s threats are considerably less deadly than yesterday’s dangers, and that it’s been a very long time since America was a rigidly ordered society that needed its leaders to provide appropriate martial values.

While there is no shame in being older than the ballpoint pen, it is McCain’s stuck in time mindset that makes him unfit for the challenges that we are facing. McCain is trapped in the kind of mindset that led us into the Iraq war and that promises to keep American troops there for many years to come. We need and deserve better.

We need someone who is not stuck in the past to challenge Americans to unite to solve the current crises that we are facing including global warming, our crumbling healthcare system and our shattered international reputation.

The world has changed greatly even in just the last 7 disastrous years of the Bush administration.

We need a president who will inspire us to rise to met the challenges of our generation not ask us stick our collective fingers in our ears while shouting “We’re number 1! We’re number 1!”

I am older than all those things too.

Some people are very sharp at McCain’s age.

McCain would be a disaster as President for many reasons but his age is not one of them..

His war hero status is bogus but even if it were true it by itself does not qualify him to be president.

He has a violent temper. He may be cool in many social situations but goes “bat shit” when stressed.

His knowledge is lacking on Iraqi politics and economics.

    He is superstitious
    He is a compulsive gambler

Neoconservatives are gathering around him as advisors.

Deep down GW Bush probably knew he was a figurehead. McCain takes him self seriously.

I agree that age ain’t nothing but a number and that some people are very sharp at McCain’s age. My grandmother is older than McCain and is still on top of things.

My issue is with the old school mindset that McCain is trapped in along with Bush, Cheney and much of the GOP. It is the mindset that led us into an unnecessary war with no plan to win the peace and no exit strategy.

GW Bush was a front for the neocons whose basic agenda is spelled out in the now defunct think tank PNAC (but you can still google its website.)

McCain is surrounding himself with those same Neocons.

Both Bush and McCain had highly successful fathers and grandfathers whose influence fraudulently propelled them both through elite schools and their careers.

1st- We can all agree that McCain is old, but being old has not proven to be a bad thing as far as Presidents go (i.e.- Ronald Reagan was 69 years old when elected). However, this leftist site proves nothing of substance. This post was about McCain’s age but then went into a useless rant about Bush being the mastermind behind the “neocons” and the “agenda”.

You know it’s truly pathetic when the main writer for this site publishes a post about “Things older than McCain” but then follows up in comments by stating that age is just a number and doesn’t mean anything. If it doesn’t mean anything, why make a post about it? Oh wait, that’s RIGHT! Leftist writer who has to have the Main Stream Media do his thinking for him. So, should I tune in to CNN or Saturday Night Live this week to see what Post Mr. Michael Crawford will be having this week? Who needs TVGuide when we have http://www.bloggernista.com?

    Papi,

You seem more than a bit wound up. I think John McCain’s fitness to be president is a legitimate concern. If elected he would be the oldest president to ever serve. We have a right to know about health related issues etc that may impede his ability to perform effectively if he is elected.

Your flinging around the word “leftist” does nothing to negate that. You can take your marching orders from the GOP Borg if you like, but at the ned of the day resistance is not futile.

Once again we keep reading Liberal talking points from you…you’re not saying anything that the MSM hasn’t already said.

As for calling you a Leftist, this game is called how it’s seen. As for “marching orders”, I have the ability to think for myself, I do not need someone else telling me what I should think or say. A+ for the Liberal Talking Points, you’re falling right in line with the MSM!

So you have the ability to think for yourself? Then why do you sound like a Mini-Me version of Rush Limbaugh?

My thoughts are legit, please quote me what it was that makes me sound like a Mini-Me of Rush?

Though it must be an oddity for someone like you to converse with someone like me who can actually type their own thoughts and not have to include a “YouTube” clip.

Still want to compare those who can think for themselves and who can’t?

    Papi,

If you’re feeling froggy, then leap.

BTW, the inability of you Republicans to effectively utilize the internet is one of the reasons who are going to get your butts kicked in November.

LOL…there you go again shying away again…dodging the issue…I’m secure in my ability to debate.

I would not be so confident (if I were you) on the elections in November. There’s a lot of Americans out there that will vote Republican BEFORE they will vote for a woman or a “Black” man. But hey- Look at the bright side for you, Hillary has already been in the White House once & Barack is “Clean” & “Articulate”!

For the Internet bit- I bet you and the rest of the Democratic Party is oh so thankful that Algore invented the Internet!! So you know- that was a joke, just like Gore.
