The Gay Male Agenda

July 27, 2008 at 10:30 am 2 comments

The boys at Life Lube, the smart and sexy blog covering all things gays, are at it again.

For months, they have been rattling the digital cages to generate a community wide discussion about what gay men need to realize our inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Now they are kicking it up a notch with a fascinating series of guest posts from activists across the country who lay out their visions for a gay men’s health agenda.

Here is a taste:

Says public health researcher Stewart Landers:

We need more documentation and understanding of how naturally-occurring activities provide resiliency and support to the gay/bi/trans male communities. This includes everything from Gay Men’s Choruses to Men’s Naked Yoga to Bear Circuit Parties.

There should be a coordinated effort to study resiliency factors for gay/bi/trans men across the lifespan. In other words, what supports at the individual, family, community and society level help gay/bi/trans men lead healthy lives from birth through old age? What are our “families of choice” and how are they evolving? These may include “traditional” networks of friends or the more recent movement to parent through adoption, alternative insemination, and use of surrogates.

Says writer and activist Michael Scarce:

Ask gay men what they want and need.

Too many organizations billing themselves as “community-based” are sorely out of touch with their constituents. Gay men’s health issues are different than gay men’s health concerns. The quality of men’s lives can only be improved if we seek a greater understanding of the qualitative ways in which men are affected by their health and the health of those around them within a larger context of how they live and love. The very definitions of health and wellness are subjective concepts, and we have much to learn from the perspective and vantage point of members of our communities.

Thanks so much for posting this Michael! We are waiting for you to weigh in as well 🙂 And there are lots more coming… We are really looking for a broad array of input from all kinds of folks – from the grassroots to executive directors to anyone at all who has an opinion on what a gay men’s health agenda should look like. People can leave their thoughts in the comments, or they can write up something as a full post – we just want to craft something that brings in a wide variety of voices and experiences.

Thanks again, and can’t wait to read – and post – yours!
